My New Brain

Just this morning I was wondering what happened to Monday. This is not uncommon for me and one of the many reasons I need a new brain. That digital gizmo up there is the new brain. Up until very recently, I fired my kilns manually. I didn't actually mind except for the staying up to at night to make sure I didn't burn down the studio. But after I got my little metal clay kiln , which I can program to fire in any way I want, I asked myself do you really, really want to keep doing ceramic firings in the old school way? Well no, actually. It is in fact tedious. So finally I have entered the digital world of firing and outfitted my kilns with a programmable controller. Yee Haa! I am modern. The brain is doing my job right now while I have a glass of wine. How cool is that?
There are 4 new glazes in there, a couple of new designs, and a bazillion beads. Actually, there are not a bazillion beads. I exagerate. But it feels like it. I'm always excited when there are new things in the kiln. I'm kinda like a kid waiting for Christmas. Opening the kiln is a little like opening a present. It's the anticipation. I don't always get what I hoped for but there is usually something interesting.
And speaking of interesting. After several days of 50F weather, the weatherman says that we are going to do the rain, ice, and snow thing all over again. This is truly not the interesting I would like to see tomorrow through early Friday morning. The weather related interesting I would like to see is 70F weather and bright blue skies.

Welcome to the wonderful world of digtal kiln controllers. I would hate to try and fire some of the glass panels I do without one.
Program and push the go button couldn't be easier!

Do they make new brains for other purposes?!!!haha, feeling like I could use one these days. That pot full of birds and beads is the prettiest picture I have ever seen!

Wendy, I'm hopeful on some of these birdies. But they are all new glazes so we'll see if any of them get out of the studio.

Greer, I quite agree with the programable controller now! I can't imagine ever doing this in another way. Unless of course I went back to the old reduction gas or wood firing stuff. Nope. Not doing that.

Sharon, I am searching for new brains for other purposes. Will let you know ;-). The beads always look good to me 'raw'. We'll see once they've had their firey baptism.

Yay for no longer having to babysit a kiln!!!

I'm counting down the days until March when we go to Phoenix and have that interesting weather that you (and I!) want. Atlanta has also been in the 50s and I'm ready for the warmer temps

I love the doves!

And if my kiln weren't pre-programmed, I'd burn down something or other.

Darnit! I can tell already that I'm going to NEED one (or more) of those birds. I should just start having my paychecks mailed directly to you LOL! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Hey there everyone! The little birdies will be out tonight I think.

Carol, I use a Paragon SC2 for metal clay. I love that little kiln.

KJ, I'd be happy with just half of your check ;-)

Wowee!!! That's some crazy weather for Texas. I've always loved looking in to my grandparent's kiln. The bright orange glow is amazing while it's fired and the pottery that comes out is always beautiful. :)

When you're visiting the Wizard next could you pick up a digital brain for me as well?

LeAnn, your new pieces are just so beautiful!!... and they are such big hits - I was just visiting your Etsy shop. I think we all love these sweet birds especially! I don't think either of us are going to see 70F weather any time soon....
