Swimming in a sea of boxes

The studio is up and running but not necessarily tidy. There is a plan in place but I keep getting distracted by the things I find in boxes. Like that fish. I haven't seen that fish in a long time. I made her eons ago in a time before the creation of dirt. And then packed it up in one of the seemingly endless moves we've made.

I've got oodles of space in this new studio. A full 16 feet of table top. Woo Hoo! And light, glorious light.

I wonder how long it will take to cover those tables in projects (err untidness)?  Actually, there is a fair bit of untidyness happening already. It feels like home that way. I think maybe I will just adhere to the motto that "a messy desk is the sign of an uncluttered mind." I love rationalisation.

This is my secret weapon for coralling the mess. I've got one big tall utility shelf. I've got tubs and containers that each contain the things I need to do a particular type of thing. Like etchant and stamps and stuff for etching all neatly organised in one container that can be pulled out, used, packed up and put away when done. I started this plan in my old studio. It didn't work there either. But ever the optimist, I just know that I can make it work here.

Then there is this. This is the office end of the studio. Rather sad looking, isn't it? It's the boring stuff to unpack and organise. It has the left over furniture, the table that I wish was something else. The packing boxes, paper, bubble mailers, printer.

And this. A totally unrelated to studio work enterprise. They are little news print seed starter pots filled with my very own special blend of seed starter soil. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts. Yes, brussel sprouts. I know it's a very unpopular vegetable. I know that Peter doesn't like brussel sprouts. But he will once he's tasted it home grown in autumn, picked after the first light frost, cooked and smothered in butter.

So how do you do it? How do you create order out of chaos? Or do you just close the door and hope the fairies will come in and sprinkle a bit of magic organising dust during the night?

Studio looks awesome! so much space for 'vertical filing' and lots of luscious light (I am not envious no not a bit)
I was sorta ok with brussels sprouts until we cooked them in high school.
Butter sauce with thrip was the last straw.

LeAnn you have done an awesome job of unpacking boxes and putting things away. I hope when it comes time to unpack my boxes this weekend that the moving fairies will arrive and help to put things in order. I went through boxes from the last move. The contents haven't seen the light of day for 7 years. Most of it isn't making the move this weekend.
With less stuff hopefully it will be easier to find a place to put it in the new place.

Complete disaster - We ditched everything and went to the beach today. I'll be picking up tonight I can't stand a disaster for too long. Love your space really - it's fantastic!!! ( and don't tell anyone but I love brussel sprouts bloied cut in half then sauteed until a nice brown crust forms...perfection! : )

I hide things. Out of sight, out of mind! Especially if it's in a nifty cute storage thingee from Target.

Hey LeAnn, your space is looking mighty fine there! It always feels like Christmas to me whenever you get to unpack boxes and find things you haven't seen in awhile, love that fish!
Right now my "studio" is a tiny corner in our front room so I had to decide to just be okay with how it is, mess and all!
Keep having fun, enjoy it all.

Totally awesome room you have!

I am so done with organization. It never works for me. Once in a while I tidy up or else I can't function, otherwise it's a mess and as long as that works I am going with it!

I am so in love with the light in your studio - sigh!
Re the brussel sprouts - if plan A doesn't work, try serving them with some chestnuts and a bit of bacon...

LeAnn, it was nice to see your studio update today - let me tell you, it's really coming along! Those tall racks are great for storage, aren't they? I love the way you are starting seeds in your space as well - perfect place with all of the sunlight!
And btw, I for one am waiting for the fairies to come and sprinkle their organizational magic in my space!

Having a space of your own is the first step! But magic fairies would be nice as well.
I don't have doors on my studio, and it looks like a mess, but I have learned that my creative mind doesn't work without a certain element of clutter. That light is fantastic! Can't wait to see what you make.
Enjoy the day!

If you find out where the fairies live - please let me know - I could really use them. My intentions are good-my time isn't!! Your studio is looking good - the light is wonderful.

What a gorgeous room! Love all those windows! It looks very cozy and homey. And organized! I have to use our living spaces for my stuff so I'm always thinking of clever places to put things. Like my car. I keep my jewelry boxes (for shipping) in the trunk of my car, some of my tools under the coffee table, and supplies tucked away in assorted little bookshelves. Sometimes I get rid of something else if I get new stuff. I think the ski boots are going away, which will make room under the bed.

I tidy up an 18" square area every so often and pretend the rest of the room looks just as nice. :)

Wow - what a great space! I love all the windows.

I try to tidy before beginning other projects, or at the very least once a week. Otherwise it's rather scary. Enjoy your new space.

Hey, I have that same uncluttered mind! what a coincidence! I also find that when i get everything neat and organized and put away and pretty, that i just sit and look at everything all neat and tidy and pretty and nothing gets done. Give me a space where everything is everywhere and i have about 12 square inches to work and i get all kinds of things done!
